Even today female infanticide persists in many parts of the world (largely in India and China). Shocking it may seem to be, but people have formed a biased opinion about a girl child. I am taken aback when I read articles in newspapers about cases relating to female infanticide. Leave alone the infanticide part, there have been instances when a day old baby had been thrown in a dustbin. The mere fact of abandoning a newborn is so shocking and scary.
No doubt people state about giving equal rights to men and women... However, here in India Sons are called upon to provide the income. Sons are looked to as a type of insurance. With this perspective, it becomes clearer that the high value given to male decreases the value given to females.
In my strong opinion, gender based discriminations should be stopped. In fact, I have been planning to start a small campaign and make an effort in educating the rural people about having a girl child. Let's hope if it works...
